Weather clauses: causing a storm in construction contracts
This blog explores how adverse weather events and conditions can affect construction projects and, as a contractor, what you can do to mitigate the associated risks.Blog
The Solicitors in the Legal Services Team at BWL have had a monumental year, establishing BWL as a regulated law firm with the capacity, experience and skillset to support its growing client base.
Paul’s blog post below reviews the highs and lows of 2019 for the Legal Services team and looks ahead at what is in store for the new year.
The biggest highlight of the year is an easy one – the launch of our no win no fee adjudication solution.
Our insurance-backed adjudication solution is totally unique in the market and financially de-risks the adjudication process for construction businesses with a dispute or claim.
Since the launch of our product in October, we have been working with 20 construction clients and have maintained a steady stream of enquiries. The product has also strengthened BWL’s complete offering, as it shows a true collaboration between our Construction Consultancy Services and Legal Services teams.
Before we launched the product, it was important for us to develop our Dispute Resolution team. We decided that we wanted to be in the heart of the legal district in London, so we took the plunge at the start of the year and opened our legal office on the Strand, which is where our Dispute Resolution team is based.
As well as the no win no fee product, we managed to win a place on a government regional Legal Services framework providing Conveyancing and Litigation advice. It’s confidential so I can’t say much more than that – but I’m proud that we managed to accomplish this alongside all the other exciting developments we have experienced!
The main challenge that we faced this year was the lack of a sophisticated client/matter management system.
As we moved from being an unregulated legal business to an established law firm regulated by the Solicitor’s Regulation Authority, it was imperative that we invested the time and effort to get a sophisticated solution in place to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
We’ve been shopping around for the perfect provider and have finally settled on a piece of software that ticks all the boxes – stay tuned for further blog posts to see how we’re getting on with it!
Other than implementing a case management system sooner, I can hand-on-heart say there isn’t anything I would’ve changed in 2019.
We have expanded the range of Legal Services we offer to include Dispute Resolution and Construction and Engineering and have increased the number of clients who use our services to almost 100 this year alone. I am immensely proud of the whole team.
Our Commercial Property and Litigation teams are also extremely busy and that’s great to see – we’ve recruited more Solicitors to accommodate this and we have even more joining us in January.
With our recent recruitment drive, the focus for us in 2020 will be to support them and our existing staff in increasing their revenue per head through a comprehensive sales strategy which we have been working on these past few months.
As we grow, we want to make sure that the correct processes are in place to ensure the team is scalable and to ensure we have the capacity for growth.
I’m also keen to understand the wants and needs of our existing clients – so we are planning on conducting customer satisfaction surveys in order to help shape our business strategy and execution of it.
It’s not long now until we find ourselves in 2020 so I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all our clients, old and new, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
